He knows that dawdling and 'getting weak in times of peace' (as Gohan did) is a fatal move. Regardless, Trunks would take it, even at his regular CG level. When did Trunks learn the latter lesson?

Well, considering that the androids came out of nowhere and destroyed nearly everything, you'd think that Trunks realises that he needs to be prepared at all times.

Nobody else could help him fight off evil, so he always had to be viligant and continue his training.

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash. Mozilla Firefox Favourite Manga Dragonball/Z/Super, Naruto/Shippuden, One Piece, Hellsing, Death Note	Pyrus has nailed this on the head. Trunks slaughters Dabra, probably one of the most overrated villains in Dragonball. I'd even go so far as to say Trunks was already likely rivaling Dabra in power at the Cell Games, though he was probably slightly weaker. Trunks with any amount of extra training would put him above Gohan who was roughly on par with Dabra and should make for an easy kill.
